WHY AND HOW TO READ MUSIC

If you already know the basics of playing the piano, wouldn’t you like to play music that is different from what you have already learned by rote? It could be a little frustrating if all you can play are the same pieces over and over again, not to mention the boredom. If you can learn to read music, you wouldn’t have any problem at all.

Reading sheet music or sight reading is usually incorporated within the piano teacher’s lessons. Some teachers will teach the student how to play the piano and how to read music at the same time; there are those who prefer that the student gains some basic knowledge in playing the piano before teaching him how to read music. Whatever the case maybe, a good piano teacher should be patient and clear enough in instructing the student on sight reading. The teacher should explain the structure of the music sheet and whatever else it may contain to the student. After the music sheet, the teacher should then pick a piece for the student that is appropriate for the level of his piano playing. It is advisable for the teacher to choose a piece that is slightly below the playing ability of the student. This way the pupil will not feel too frustrated when he has to go slow when playing and sight reading at the same time. Practice makes perfect. The teacher should make the student practice enough, that playing the piano while sight reading becomes second nature to him. If the student plays fluidly and beautifully, all the hard work will be more than rewarded.

While learning to read music can be hard and daunting, if the student pursues it with enough diligence and dedication and the teacher has enough patience and experience, the task will be over in no time at all. When the student can read music just like reading a book, the teacher can be doubly proud as well.
