How a piano works

The melodic melody of a grand piano is something that almost every human being stops to listen to. Its magnetic pull is like that of love at first sight to where you can’t hear or see anything else. A piano has been rooted in many homes across the globe and has been a symbol of togetherness with family and friends. But for many, understanding how it works is another ball park altogether. A piano’s intricate inner workings are nothing to be laughed at, the sound of each key you play must fall in order harmonically with each of its fifty one other counter parts in order for it to communicate its indulging sound.

Buying a new piano can be just as much as buying a new sedan which is why so many people are apt to buy one, and why so many others say what makes it so expensive? What makes a piano expensive is the intense labor and parts that are put in to making a finished piano work. So how does a piano work? When the person playing the piano, in this case a grand piano, strikes a key the back of the key goes upward which lifts a lever. That lever then pushes a small hammer against the string for that specific key note. At the same time a small object called the damper is pulled up from the strings allowing the subtle vibrations to move more freely.

Once the key is completely let go gravity takes over and all parts resume their original stand point. Now if you’re playing an upright piano gravity can’t take over completely so the piano is modified to where instead of sitting entirely vertical it is slightly tilted. Also an assortment of springs and small bits of dress are put in to help set the un-adapted parts fall back into place.

Now there are several different names for piano’s from the petite piano to the parlor grand piano but all give a lasting effect if played correctly. Each piano practically works in the same way as the original grand piano but none are as priceless. I’m sure that you have heard or seen a player piano in real person or on the television; it is the classical push pump playing piano. This piano works differently then any other for it has two, often three, different ways it can play.

The antique and/or more outdated ones won’t usually have a motor that helps it play by itself, but many do. Otherwise you can either play with your fingers or push the pumps to make the spring and key to go up. Those pianos were often used in classic horror films for a dramatic effect.

The piano is an instrument that has made it through the centuries of past and is bound to make it through centuries more as long as people show appreciation for its wonderful music.  Now that you understand how each key makes its wonderful music you understand the cost of these timeless instruments.
