Rock PianoRock piano or piano pop is simply rock music that uses the piano and piano related instruments such as an electric keyboard and synthesizers as the main instruments. It is used to be that rock music’s main focus was on the guitar, those black and white ivory keys are now giving the strings some competition. In the early 1900’s “ragtime genius” Scott Joplin and jazz great Jelly Roll Morton brought piano music into the public consciousness. These two African-American performed popular music on the keyboard not only in the dance halls but to the concert venues as well. In the 1950’s rock piano became a phenomenon when celebrated artists like Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and Fats Domino came into the music industry scene. Integrating piano music with rock and roll these artists have proven that music truly transcends. With the advent of the 1970’s through the 90’s, rock piano music continued to flourish with pop giants like Elton John, Billy Joel and the British band Queen with the late Freddie Mercury as its lead. These piano playing superstars wowed audiences worldwide with their own brand of heart-wrenching, feet-stomping music. During these times, inimitable piano artists like Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder (don’t you just hear those keys tinkling) also paved the way for the integration of piano music with rhythm and blues. Or can you ever forget Meatloaf with his Bat Out of Hell album?(pop rock piano at its best!) Today, piano rock still has a tremendous following with various artists preferring to use the piano as the main instrument. Bands such as Fleetwood Mac, Coldplay, Something Corporate, The Fray and Ben Folds Five are just some of the bands who have chosen to sing songs with the piano as the main accompaniment. Ditto with solo artists like Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Ben Folds. Sir Elton John and many more.
