There have been numerous discussions on whether what kind of training is better if you like to learn how to play the piano. Perhaps it is wiser to understand the differences between the two methods.
Classical training is a coherent and structured method of learning to play the piano. It is learned by reading and understanding notes and is a step by step process with the level of learning usually decided by a teacher. It uses sheet music and is precise and disciplined. Classical training means long hours of work, patience and dedication.
Pop piano training is learning by ear. It is an aural and non-linear learning process in which the student decides on his own on how far he would like to progress, as it is usually self-taught. It allows creativity, self expression as well as improvisation. It does not need a printed sheet of music but rather a very keen sense if hearing.
Although some people may consider classical training as hard, complex, exacting and technical, there are those who would argue that it is infinitely more satisfying. It has been said that once one has mastered the rudiments and techniques of a classical piece, he can then put his soul in it and play it beautifully in his own style. As for pop piano, it is fun and artistic, but wouldn’t it be better if you get to learn the basics first?
Each person should decide on his own inclinations. Learning to play pop piano could be easy and enjoyable; one can make it into a hobby. But if one has the time to invest in a classical training and the desire to study the masters, he should do so. Many of the popular pop piano artists today have had formal training. In time, one could cross over to the world of pop as many classical artists have already done.
