Piano Teaching StylesA piano teacher can employ different methods in teaching his student. Some of the most popular methods of teaching are the Alfred method. Bastien method, Suzuki method and the most recent Mayron Cole method. The Alfred method uses colored pictures and graphics in the teaching process. It emphasizes the use of position playing for pieces written for the “five-finger” position. Although this method enables the student to recognize chords and their progression as well as the interval between notes, the student’s competence falls short when it domes to reading notes. This method should be used as a stepping stone for a more progressive approach of teaching. The Bastien method or the Piano Party Series is good for very young beginners as it is focused on technique (fingers dropped in the keys with knuckles arched round and high). Positive pictures and graphics are also used. Students should be constantly reminded to assume correct hand position and they don’t learn to play by ear. The Suzuki method came from Japan and was a success with the Japanese students; other students however should make sure that the teacher has been certified in this method. Since students learn to play by ear, exposure to performing is encouraged; however, the students are unable to read notes and are sorely lacking in technique. The Mayron Cole method is relatively new; introduced in the late 1980’s, this method diverts from the traditional methods as it emphasizes teaching piano lessons in a group. It is an innovative way of teaching piano to all ages. It has nine levels in which proficient note reading, consistent rhythm counting and musical creativity is stressed. A piano teacher can choose to use any method; he can even combine different approaches or use his own style of teaching. A good piano teacher will adapt any method of teaching to cater to the needs of his student and ensure that the student learns well and becomes proficient.
