Finding The Right Teacher For Playing Piano

If you have decided that you would like you or your child to learn to play the piano, you should choose a teacher who can best help you achieve your goals.

Finding a teacher is relatively easy; you can always look at the yellow pages of the phone book or ask for references from your friends. You can also see if there are music organizations in your community and ask for help. If there is a local college or university in your area, you can inquire from the music department if any members are giving private lessons.

Make a list of names and conduct an interview with each person; choosing the right one for the job will depend upon your own discretion. Bring the child with you if he is the one getting the lessons. There are even some teachers who are willing to give a preliminary lesson for free to be able to discern your or your child’s aptitudes as well as a way of letting you know the teacher’s capabilities. Discuss with the person the method that he will employ in his teaching; there are different methods of learning the piano and you should choose one that is just right for you. Ask how much the lessons will cost and for how long the lessons are to last. You should also know whether he will conduct his lessons at a studio or at your home. (It is better that the lessons be held at a studio since there will be less outside interference.) You could also inquire if the teacher will be using computer assisted theory labs as well as involving his students in any musical events. Be also sure to have some educational background on the person of your choice.

Remember that having a teacher’s professional training and experience will benefit you more, for learning to play the piano is not merely playing the notes on a music sheet, it is learning to play them with meaning and empathy.
