Overview of the Jazz Piano

One of the most complex tasks is playing the jazz piano. Playing jazz requires several years of study while nearly everyone can learn to play basic pop songs on the piano. Among the several things required to be good are natural talent, an ear for improvising, practice and hard work.

Jazz Music and the Jazz Piano

One of the most important instruments in jazz music is the jazz piano. One can play chords, multiple notes at the same time on the jazz piano as opposed to other instruments like the trumpet or saxophone making it have a more complex role than the trumpet for example. Providing the basic swing, melodic and harmonic background, time keeping and to accompany the solo instrumetn is what the jazz piano can be used for. It provides the basic rhythm, basic guiding chord structures and the melody at the same time when the jazz piano is used as a solo instrument.

Jazz piano serves as an instrument to demonstrate the complex, harmonic melodic and rhythmic conceptions of jazz theory. Jelly Roll Morton, Art Tatum, Thelonius Monk, Keith Jarret, Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans or Dave Brubeck are all examples of notable jazz pianists that have brought something new to jazz theory or developed in some way. Essential to the learning process of playing jazz piano is listening to these experts.

It is hard to acquire the skill of playing the jazz piano. Listening to the various styles of jazz; ragtime, swing, cool, bebop, free jazz, and other jazz pianist, aritists, and bands is the basic advice to follow. One should listen and try to understand the basic harmonic constructions that various artist use and why they use them. Listen attentively not just as backgorund music.

Jazz theory and classical theory go hand in hand so one must have an overall knowledge of the theoretical background of both classical and jazz first in order to play the jazz piano correctly. Classical training is needed at least simultaneously with jazz training. One can learn to improvise to start palying by ear when confident playing from sheet music. One can build up and create unique improvisions with extensive background knowledge of music theory. Extremely proficient playing of the instrument itself and the ability to perform unique improvisions without musical commonplaces are all involved in playing the jazz piano. Truely great jazz piano players will develop thier own style from a firm theoretical background though at first one naturally copies the styles of some favorite pianists.
